How do you wash the deli containers? I’ve resigned to putting them in the dishwasher but I would imagine that leaks plastic and isn’t the most environmentally friendly decision…

This is the subject of much internet debate. Even within restaurants, there are differing opinions about what does and doesn’t fly (even with non-BPA containers). Personally, I never microwave them— even the sturdy ones. I do put mine in the dishwasher. That’s a level of risk I’m okay with; but the most conservative option would be to use it only for dry storage and hand wash. Or, opt for glass storage. Restaurants often avoid glass storage because it’s expensive and if it breaks you have a major problem (the floors, the food contamination). It’s easier to manage glass at home.

Great info, thank you! Like so many things, feels like a trade off between convenience, price, and eco-friendliness.

I am due for the quarterly freezer clean out and this was very motivating!

Yay! I love the reminder to do these organizing blitzes more regularly. My perfectionism tends to make me want to do THE ENTIRE KITCHEN from top to bottom once a year, but really, doing most of the key elements 4 times a year is just easier and more effective for maintenance.

I live by my painters tape, Sharpie, and tall clear containers. (We don't always decant into them though; just dropping my bags from the bulk section of the store into the containers helps keep them fresh and organized.)

Yeah. I find decanting to be an obstacle to maintaining order sometimes. If I'm building in an extra step on too many of my pantry ingredients, I'm less likely to do any of the organizing as I put things away. Maybe that's just me? But I try not to make putting things away too hard so that the things actually get put away where they should. But I swear by those cereal cannisters. We move through cereal slowly enough that staleness would be a concern otherwise!

We decant our oats for the same reason (and to make scooping with a measuring cup easier).

Gamechanger for me was moving the cutting boards I use most to counter-level, because stooping down to get them was hurting my back. I wiiiiish I could use that space for a countertop oven but the truth is those boards are in heavy rotation....

So true! I find keeping a cutting board right on the counter also helps me not let myself put clutter there. I won't put stuff on top of the cutting board!
